Biography and mission

The band as cultural guide

Juma Tutu performing on stage with saxophone and microphone

Juma Tutu's music is grounded in Mombasa, shaped by Makande, by saxophone mentorship, by Generations Band, Bango Sounds, Them Mushrooms and the wider coastal music lineage. The Swahili Jazz Band describes its music as layered with vibrant vocals, earthy rhythms and sophisticated but folkloric songs.

The mission is simple and demanding: preserve and share Swahili culture with the world through performances, education, mentorship and cultural exchange.

"We desire that our music will continue to go international... share our unique sound with the world and bring up the younger generation to share the stage with us"
